The 3rd Saturday of each month

Many of my clients shared some common problems that brought them to me, like struggling to:

  •          Get paying clients
  •          Pay the bills
  •          Stay motivated
  •          Believe they will be successful in this business

Does any of that sound familiar?

One of the first and most important steps you can take may surprise you.  It doesn’t involve marketing, social media, Google Ads, search engine optimization or networking (although all of that is important at some point).  The first and most important step you can, and must, take is to develop your Mindset.

What is your Mindset?  It is a collection of your beliefs about yourself, your abilities, opportunities, possibilities, and potential.  It is the perspective through which you view your world.

Setting the stage and creating a mindset that is perfectly aligned with your goals and vision is the most important key in life and business.  Putting effort into that gets you more results than any action without mindset.  If you’re living in, and emoting, fear, anxiety and doubt then your mindset is not aligned and any action you take will produce disappointing results (trust me, I know!).

Your thoughts have a direct impact on your reality.  If you don’t believe me, look around you!  Whatever thoughts you’re giving space and time to will show up in your life.  Your subconscious creates your reality and it is very literal.  It focuses on the subject matter, not the details, so when you spend a lot of energy thinking about what you DON’T WANT you’re basically telling your subconscious that you DO WANT it.  Think of it like a magnet, whatever YOU are focused on, YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS focuses on, and it will attract and magnetize more of that to you.  Think about what you give the most energy to in your thoughts and just take a look at your reality.  See what I mean?

What do you want most right now?  Did you picture it?  Now, do you believe you will attain it?  If you answered “no”, you have some real work to do to change your mindset.  If you answered “yes”, but you are still looking for the evidence then you have some work to do too!  The good news is that creating this mindset is simple (note, not easy, but simple).

Over the next few weeks I’m going to be sharing a lot of information with you about how to get control of your mindset, and how to create the business you really want (and deserve!).

Next time I’m going share a technique that has been responsible for some awesome shifts for my clients!

When I revamped my website and had a blog installed on it I promised myself I would actually use it.  So here I sit 6 months later and I am determined to keep my promise!  I have been so hell-bent on writing something valuable and earth shattering that I’ve been completely paralyzed and haven’t written anything at all.  Yet I have plenty of clients and peers who value my input and insight, so what’s my problem?  I’m glad you asked because it might be familiar to you too!

I suffer from a disorder known as “Impossibly High Expectations Leading to Complete Inaction” Disorder.  The bad news is it’s very common.  The good news is it’s completely treatable.  I’m expecting to make a full recovery and I’d like to help you if you’re suffering from it too.

How do you recognize this ailment?  You might be afflicted with this disorder if you:

  • Consistently beat yourself up about something you know you “should” be doing
  • Find you regularly procrastinate on a particular activity
  • Wish you could “just do it”
  • Understand the benefit of doing it, but you just can’t bring yourself to execute
  • Feel really relieved and proud of yourself when you actually do it

No matter how much the rational part of me knows that I have to share my information, tips, philosophies, and tools with you, the control freak in me always struggles with letting go of the idea that it has to be perfect before I can put it out there.  This unrealistic expectation has kept me from sharing stories, ideas and solutions and it’s caused me to miss opportunities to:

  • Build relationships with prospects who need my help
  • Appeal to potential referral sources
  • Grow my business and make more money

If you are among the afflicted, then it’s having the same effects on you!

So what can you do to combat this crippling ailment?  As a control freak “in recovery” I can tell you that there are three things you can do right now:

  • Shift your mindset – Recognize that it’s holding you back in your business (and probably in other areas of your life).  Failing to take action always results in missed opportunities.  Comfort yourself with the knowledge that anything you do is temporary.  It can be changed, improved, tweaked or replaced at any time.  It’s for now, not for-ever and as I’ve learned working with Christian Mickelson (ultra successful business coach), “done is better than perfect”.
  • Recognize why you’re REALLY procrastinating – I always procrastinate when it comes to writing.  I get paralyzed at the idea of writing articles, stressing over what will be interesting, helpful and supportive of the growth of your business.  I’m a pretty decent writer, so it’s not the activity of writing that’s the problem, it’s knowing what to say.  It’s the same thing with Social Media.  I get paralyzed thinking that I have to come up with the “perfect” thing to say.  I stress over the length and whether it’s juicy, helpful, and valuable enough.  Then frustrated I move on to something else.  Recently it occurred to me that every day I hear from my clients what you’re facing and what you need support with, why not use that?  Light bulb moment!  So I’ve started keeping notes and using them in short bursts (like this one!).  So, ask yourself what you’re  putting off and WHY.
  • Get some support! Every day, I look at my “to do” list and I realize that some of the things that I am putting off are things that I struggle with (anything technology related) or don’t like.  If you feel like you can’t afford to hire someone to do it for you, then get creative.  Find someone who is looking for extra money and ask them if they’re interested in doing some projects for you.  Barter with someone who knows how to do something you don’t.  I was bartering my coaching services with a friend who does massage and bodywork.  Ask a friend!  I was looking for a title for this article and I emailed it to my friend, she gave me some title suggestions, editing suggestions and she doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going to ask her to post it for me too!

If you are truly committed to growing your business, serving your clients and sharing your gifts then you will do whatever it takes.  What are you prepared to do?

I’d love to hear what you’ve been putting off and procrastinating about, so tell me your story!

You’ve been looking for it!  A simple, affordable, HOLISTIC system to build your business & attract PAYING clients.  If you’re not making enough money, give your services for free, feel like a financial burden, don’t like “selling” and want to make a difference, I created Healers Can Make Money™ for YOU.  In this 10-week program I share all the steps that took my business from Zero paying clients to a FULL PRACTICE in 8 months by addressing your business problems & the emotional blocks causing them.

See what everyone is saying about it here:  http://www.HealersCanMakeMoney.com/program

I went to an event in Boston last night celebrating the book launch of Dare Dream Do by Whitney Johnson and I cannot wait to read her book!

In conversation with a couple of women I met, blogging and social media came up. Actually one of the women asked if I was on Twitter. “Yes”, I replied, but I had to instantly qualify that response by saying I haven’t quite figured out how to use it. That made me realize that I have the exact same problem with my blog.

I work all day with women business owners helping them identify and work through the emotional blocks that are showing up in their business and here I am staring at this very obvious block without knowing how to attack it! Well that changes today! I made decision last night, I made the choice to address this head on, so here I go.

When I think about writing a post for my blog, Facebook or Twitter I am overwhelmed with the fear of finding something to say that is:

  • Valuable
  • New information
  • Short and sweet (something I ALWAYS struggle with!)

One of the women said she had that struggle too and she suggested I think about what I know and find a way to make it interesting. For some reason that really resonated with me.

So, I’m going to explore this block a bit and see how it fits in with my Energy Centers and what I need to do to eliminate it.

My fear about making sure it’s valuable and new information are probably related to my Solar Plexus Chakra which governs confidence, courage, my perception of myself and the way the world sees me. It’s also about motivation, discipline and will power. It’s known as the Power Center and it’s really like the intuition for the most primal parts of ourselves (gut instincts). For those of us who are control freaks (or control freaks in recovery as like to think of myself) this is where the need for control is born and lives. And I almost forgot it’s where perfectionism is also housed.

The idea of putting myself out there to do something that I’m not completely comfortable with, not totally sure how to do it, is a frightening concept for me. I know it scares the beejesus out of a lot of women, so I’m in really good company! Some beliefs tied to this block are:

  • When I don’t know what I’m doing, I will do it wrong
  • When I don’t know what I’m doing I have no idea how it will turn out
  • If I can’t control how it turns out I can’t do it
  • If I make a mistake people will think I’m not good at what I do
  • If I make a mistake my clients won’t trust me
  • If I can’t do it perfectly I shouldn’t do it
  • If I’m not perfect I won’t be loved

My God, when I look at that list, it’s no wonder I have such a hard time writing posts!

So now that I see what beliefs are tied to this block it brings me back to reality and helps me to really see that although my work is very important and has a dramatic impact on the lives of myself and my clients, that doesn’t trickle down to every single action I take.

The next step is for me to rewrite these beliefs into positive “I” statements that are written in the present tense. This part gets a little tricky because you can’t use any negative words like without, not, no, so you have to get creative and sometimes that means splitting it into two new positive beliefs.

So here are my rewrites:

  • When I don’t know what I’m doing, I will do it wrong – Even when I am unfamiliar with something, I trust in my ability and know the experience will provide a lesson for me.
  • When I don’t know what I’m doing I have no idea how it will turn out – Knowing the outcome is unimportant when taking inspired action.
  • If I make a mistake people will think I’m not good at what I do – Making mistakes is part of the learning process and unrelated to my value as a person and a professional.
  • If I make a mistake my clients won’t trust me – My clients trust me for who I am and how I show up in the world
  • If I can’t do it perfectly I shouldn’t do it – I take inspired action and trust that perfection is unnecessary.
  • If I’m not perfect I won’t be loved – I am loved deeply for who I am.

These may not be perfect, but they feel a lot better than my current beliefs.

So think about something in your business (or your life) that you know you should be doing, but somehow you’re unable to take the necessary action. Spend some quiet time asking yourself what you’re afraid of. Don’t be afraid to ask yourself “why” over and over. Do not be fooled by your ego’s attempt to pacify you with “I don’t have enough time, money, energy”. While those things may be true, THEY ARE NEVER THE ROOT PROBLEM. Come up with a list of some of the beliefs that are keeping you from “just doing it”. Then reword them into a positive belief statement that matches your vision/desire. These become affirmations that you can use to help shift your belief.

I’ll take these and work them into my subconscious – so they match my vision – using Psych-K. It’s much quicker than affirmations and it allows me to balance for more than one belief statement at a time. If you need help shifting your limiting beliefs more quickly, let me know, I’ll be happy to help you!
